Telecom Immunity From Warrantless Wiretaps?

In a Reuters story today entitled Phone Company Immunity Wins Test Vote in Senate, this is the opening paragraph:

President George W. Bush won a test vote in the Senate on Thursday on his demand that any telephone company that participated in his warrantless domestic spying program receive immunity from lawsuits.

Fortunately, the House version of the bill has no provision for telecom immunity. Tens of thousands of concerned citizens have already emailed their Senators to express their opposition to immunity. There is a showdown brewing during bill reconciliation, please be sure to take additional action to make sure your representatives know how you feel. You might think that to save the falling U.S. economy that we should just let the telecoms off the hook so they can get back to making their record profits while surveilling Americans illegaly. But alas, no.

If they did nothing illegal, then why would they need immunity?

UPDATE: Please contact your Senator.
